I was originally hoping to observe hedgehogs, but I needed a hedgehog livecam that I couldn't find. Then, I decided to observe the trash dump outside our house instead. This particular trash dump is few strolls away, so it is very accessible. There are a lot of interesting things around it whenever there is nothing to record about the trash. Like this black cat came out of nowhere started meowing at me, and these enigma birds perching and chirping on trees. Currently right now, I've seen and observed what people throw in the trash like old mattress, old furniture and old stuffs. Guess what these things are in common: they are all old. After realizing that I just have one question, do we throw things because they are old or they aren't functioning? If we apply this to people, who are the trash?

TRASH
So I am starting this observation thing in my class. I haven't done this kind of thing in the past, so this is my first time doing this; I hope I'll do great and won't mess up. I'm not familiar with observing things around me until sophomore year when we read a part of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek called "Seeing" by Annie Dillard. It opened my eyes why there are stuffs around us and not just us living in this globe. Currently right now, we read "Living like Weasels"(that is also written by Annie Dillard), "Listening to Owls" and "Lists of Nothing in Particular". These are all about observations that could help me with my observations.

Interesting, even disturbing, questions at the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Wes Reid the questions at the end can really make a person think. As you say that people usually get rid of things that are old and have stopped and are considered "trash". If we apply this to people I assume the elders or people who are sick would be throw away and of course we don't literally( well we should't literally throw them away) however I do think the theirs been occasions where they are mistreated as if they were trash, no longer "functioning". It would be cool to to see examples of these and see how they connect. Nice blog, keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteThe question really made me think for a minute. Humans do throw people aside but I think it is because people find no use for them in their life anymore. Like old friends who aren't friends anymore because they no longer just do whatever the other wanted.
ReplyDeleteI think your observation is interesting. I never really thought of trash to observe but it's a good idea, especially with the question you're posing at the end. I also like how you mention the life around the trash. It makes a beauty and ugly contrast.
